“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. (Phil 6:4)” — this week is just one thing piled on top of another on top of another….can’t wait until thursday =/

We were discussing this a couple of months ago, before this cartoon came out. Perhaps this is an example of how temporal trends cause people to come up with the same ideas at around the same time, like Leibniz, Newton, and calculus.

yuube no yume

(David showed me this xkcd while we were in Uganda)

I had this really interesting dream yesterday. Justin, me, Chris, possibly Agnes, and one more person (I think MChen was driving) were gangsters and we had to kill someone. We were all in a car with suits on, and then we decided last minute that we should probably get dark sunglasses to cover our identities…so Justin commissioned Chris to go to the store on the side of the road to get sunglasses for all of us. The whole time, we were trying to justify our actions, but then last minute we decided murder was a bad thing =) I remember one scene where Justin’s just standing there, praying. Then I decided it probably wasn’t safe to be dressed up as gangsters while standing in the streets.

But yeah, it’s cool when you dream and write them down, they stay with you forever. I tried to log as many dreams as I could over the summer, and I still remember some interesting ones…

On a whole different note, my favorite dream of all time has to be flying (I think I’ve had this 2-3 times). If you ever have the chance of flapping your arms and soaring in the sky, riding along convection currents, etc etc, do enjoy.

“Dear Student,
It has come to our attention that a student who was in Uganda doing similar work as the Duke Engage program you went on and who went rafting on the Nile has tested positive for schistosomiasis. Please call 681-Well (9355) to make an appointment with the travel nurse for a screening test and to finish any vaccine series you may need.” — hmm…i think there were 5 dukeengage programs in uganda….but not all of them went rafting….chances chances….

palabrotas

Back when I was in first grade, I remember walking to Party City with my babysitter’s super-cool 5th-grade daughter to get some candy. I forgot what we were talking about exactly, but she brought up, “Do you know what ‘bitch’ means?” “No…” I said, and listened as she bestowed her 5th-grade wisdom upon me.

I think for most of my life, cussing seemed to be the cool thing to do. I would feel powerful, mature, and rebellious whenever these too-cool-for-school words left my lips. By high school, I was using “fuck” and every conjugation of it possible to express even my slightest frustrations. Even to my friends, I would say “fuck you” whenever I got irritated, albeit more often jokingly than not.

By college, I’ve tried to tone down my cussing, but this past summer in Uganda, I realized I was saying “fuck” more and more again. Living there was frustrating, but I still had no reason to cuss at every single inconvenience. I’ve been told that it’s very easy to fall into a cussing habit when the people around you cuss, and I agree. Especially on a college campus, cuss words just seem so much more innocuous since they get casually tossed out all the time. But in the end, debemos recordar que las palabrotas can and will corrupt a person, so let’s not cuss =)

The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks. -Luke 6:45
